MPI Import Permit Process

•EPA/HSNO status determination is required for the species.
•An Import Health Standard (IHS) must exist and be followed.
•Requires an approved transitional/containment facility.
•IATA-compliant transport and 72-hour advance notification are required.

Approved Species & Biosecurity

•Only species on the approved list may be imported.
•Heavily biosecurity-restricted by MPI; the South Island has very limited local suppliers.

Protected Species

•Giant wētā are absolutely protected under the Wildlife Act 1953.
•Never collect or trade protected native invertebrates.
